Residential Landscaping FAQs
Seasonal Cleanup
View all Seasonal Cleanup FAQsIn Essex County, we start spring cleanups in mid-to-late March once snow melts. Book by early March to secure your preferred timing.
Our standard fall cleanup includes one comprehensive visit. Multi-visit packages are available for properties with heavy tree canopy — most clients in established neighbourhoods opt for 2–3 visits.
Lawn Care & Maintenance
View all Lawn Care FAQsEvery scheduled visit includes mowing at the optimal 3–3.5 inch height for our climate, precision edging along beds and walkways, string trimming around obstacles, and blowing clippings off driveways and walkways. We also keep an eye on your lawn's health throughout the season — if we notice signs of grub damage, dry spots, or compaction, we'll flag it and recommend a treatment plan. Weekly service runs May through September across Windsor, Tecumseh, Lakeshore, and Essex.
The ideal mowing height for lawns in Essex County is 3–3.5 inches. This promotes deeper root growth, better drought resistance during our hot summers, and naturally crowds out weeds. We never cut more than one-third of the blade height at a time — especially important during the hot, humid stretches common in Southwestern Ontario from late June through August.
During peak growing season (May through September), most lawns in Windsor-Essex need mowing once a week. In early spring and late fall when growth slows, every 10–14 days is enough. The key rule is never to cut more than one-third of the blade height at a time — cutting too aggressively stresses the grass, especially during the hot, humid summers we get in Southwestern Ontario.
Garden Design & Planting
View all Garden Design FAQsEvery project starts with an on-site consultation where we assess your yard's sun exposure, soil type, and drainage — critical factors in Essex County where clay-heavy soils and Zone 7a conditions shape what thrives. From there, we create a detailed planting plan showing recommended species, placement, spacing, and mature sizes. We review it with you before any work begins, so there are no surprises.
We focus on proven performers for Zone 7a. Native species like Black-eyed Susan, Purple Coneflower, Switchgrass, Milkweed, Wild Bergamot, and Goldenrod thrive here and support pollinators. For structure, we recommend reliable shrubs like Hydrangea, Boxwood, Ninebark, and Serviceberry. Daylilies are extremely reliable in Essex County's summer heat, and Karl Foerster feather reed grass adds year-round structure while tolerating our clay soils.
We offer a one-season warranty on all plant material installed by our crew across Essex County, provided the recommended watering schedule is followed. If a plant fails to establish under normal conditions during the first growing season, we'll replace it.
Patios & Hardscaping
View all Hardscaping FAQsA typical residential patio (200–400 sq ft) takes 3–5 days from excavation to completion. Larger or more complex projects may take 1–2 weeks. In Essex County, our season for patio installation runs May through November. Clay-heavy soils common across Windsor, Lakeshore, and Tecumseh require thorough base preparation and compaction — we won't cut corners on excavation depth, because proper base work is what prevents frost-heave shifting.
Essex County's freeze-thaw cycles are tough on outdoor surfaces — without proper base work, pavers shift, settle, and crack within a few years. We excavate to a minimum 10-inch depth, install geotextile fabric to prevent soil migration, compact granular base in lifts for stability, and screed a level sand setting bed. On the clay-heavy soils common in Windsor and Lakeshore, we go deeper to 12 inches. This is the work that's invisible once the patio is done, but it's the difference between a 5-year patio and a 25-year patio.
In Southwestern Ontario, the best patio materials need to handle repeated freeze-thaw cycles without cracking or shifting. Interlocking concrete pavers are the most popular choice — they're frost-heave resistant because individual pavers flex independently, and damaged ones can be replaced without redoing the whole surface. Natural stone (flagstone, limestone) is the premium option with a 25–30 year lifespan and excellent freeze-thaw resistance. Poured concrete is the most affordable but typically cracks within 15–20 years in our climate. We help clients choose based on their property, style preference, and long-term plans.
Tree & Hedge Care
View all Tree & Hedge Care FAQsIn Essex County, dormant pruning is ideal from late January through early March, before sap begins to flow. Spring-flowering shrubs like lilac, forsythia, and magnolia should be pruned within two weeks of finishing their bloom. Summer-flowering shrubs (like hydrangea paniculata) can be pruned in late winter along with deciduous trees. We advise on the ideal timing for each species on your property during our initial assessment.
Most hedges in Essex County benefit from 2–3 trims per season: once in late spring after the initial growth flush, again in mid-summer, and a final shaping in early fall. Cedar hedges have a more specific schedule — one major trim in late June to early July, with an optional light trim in early September.
